Grain Sterilization and Colonization

In order for mycelial culture to grow into something, it requires a highly dense nutritional source to grow into. But first the culture usually requires a basic source of nutrient to grow into. Once the mycelium has colonized this basic grain under suitable conditions, then this "grain spawn" can be added to a "bulk substrate", and then the mushroom fruiting stage can begin. The "bulk substrate" is a more complex nutritional source for the mushroom spawn to grow into (i.e. combination of hardwood oak, vermiculite, rye grains, brown rice, soil etc) but more often than not, grain spawn is usually required before inoculating a bulk substrate with mushroom culture.

In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to first sterilize and then inoculate the " grain spawn " which is the 1st nutrient source your mushroom culture will grow into.

1. Get your grains ready

Depending on the species of mushroom you are dealing with, you may require different types of grain. I am using organic rye grain in this tutorial as most mushrooms are compatible with it.
